Enviro-Tip of the Month: Smarter Holiday Savings

smarter holiday savings

With cold weather and the holidays approaching, it’s time to start decorating and preparing for gatherings with family and friends. Whether you’re staying home or traveling, here are some simple tips to help you save this season:

-Save on your energy bills by switching to LED bulbs. They have a longer life span and emit much less heat, which results in more money in your pocket. Also remember to help LaRC save on energy bills by turning off your office lights and computers over the weekends and when you’re out of the office.

-40% of battery sales occur during the holiday season. Now’s a great time to switch to rechargeable batteries. They also make a great gift! Speaking of batteries… don’t forget that batteries at LaRC are managed as Universal Waste and should never be placed in the trash.

-Cut down on paper use by switching to e-cards. Many websites offer this service for free. This will also save you money because you will not need stamps!

-Think about how much waste typically ends up in your trash can this time of year. During the holidays, the volume of household waste increases by 25%. Recycling is made easy at LaRC with readily-accessible bins, and we hope you continue your recycling practices at home!

-Don’t overlook the microwave. It typically uses up to 75% less energy than the conventional oven, and doesn’t over heat your house!  The microwave is great for prepping your side dishes.

-Ribbon… cats love it, but humans throw away 38,000 miles of it each year. That’s enough to tie a bow around the Earth! Reuse old ribbon, and consider repurposing other items like maps, comics, and paper bags for wrapping paper.

Have environmentally-friendly holiday tips of your own? Share them with your coworkers, friends, and family!
