Enviro-Tip of the Month: Stop Junk Mail

how to stop junk mail tip

TIRED OF JUNK MAIL IN YOUR MAILBOX?

Almost every household and office building receives unwanted advertisements, magazines, and solicitations that are immediately recycled or thrown out to avoid clutter. It’s not only a personal inconvenience, but junk mail also negatively impacts the planet!

In fact, more than 100 million trees are chopped down each year to make the paper for junk mail. In the United States alone, nearly 4 million tons of junk mail are produced each year. But that’s not all… there’s several other adverse side effects:

  • Green House Gas Emissions- The carbon emissions from junk mailings each year are roughly equivalent to those of 9 million cars
  • Wasted Water- About 28 billion gallons of water are used to produce and recycle junk mail each year.
  • Landfill Contributions- The average adult receives 41 pounds of junk mail each year. Even worse, 44% of that mail goes directly to the landfill unopened. (EarthDay.org)

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?

The Federal Trade Commission website explains how you can have your name removed from unsolicited mailing lists, including credit card offers.

Yellow Pages lets you opt out of receiving Yellow Page Directories.

Don’t forget! The EPA estimates that only 40% of junk mail is recycled properly. Don’t forget that junk mail and phone books can be recycled in your curbside bin or at a convenience center in Hampton Roads, and junk mail received at the office can be recycled in the appropriate paper bin. Just be sure to remove all personal information from your mail before recycling!
