Energy Awareness Month 2019 Tours

This October the NASA Langley Energy Team is hosting weekly, educational tours where you’ll have the opportunity to visit several of the Tidewater region’s most energy and water efficient facilities.

There are limited spaces available for our tours so register today! Please register by using the links below. Busses will be provided from LaRC with the plan to depart from B1195 (flagpost) at 8:30 AM. Further directions will be provided to registered attendees:

Williamsburg Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour – October 1

  • Wastewater treatment is a process that would fascinate every viewer at first sight. Viewers’ jaws will drop when they see chemical and biological actions coming together to breakdown complex organic matter to benign forms. Do you how the wastewater from our sinks is treated to reduce its toxicity? Do you want to know how the oil laden wastewater yields to the complex processes, and the resultant skimmed oil transforms into powerful energy? Please join us on October 1, 2019 to a LaRC employee tour of the Williamsburg Wastewater Treatment Plant! After this tour, your mindset will change with respect to the way we dispose our wastewater at our various homes.

(FULL) Jefferson Lab Tour – October 21

  • Atom, they say, is an indivisible particle that can take place in a chemical reaction. Most of us have not seen how this indivisible entity looks like. The only place to see the real-time behavior of this energetic entity is at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab). Here, scientists utilize the lab’s unique particle accelerator, known as the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), to probe the most basic building blocks of matter. Do want to have a vivid understanding of these energetic particles, the forces that bind them, and how they influence our world? Please join the Energy Team on October 21, 2019 to a LaRC employee tour of the Jefferson Lab at Newport News!

Norfolk Naval Base Cogeneration Plant Tour – October 29

  • Climate change and its attendant global warming continue unabated as far as we consume the indispensable energy in our daily work. One of the best ways to tackle this nagging phenomena is to recycle and harness the heat we produce in our industrial and residential processes. One of the best ways to appreciate and learn how to efficiently utilize the energy is the process of cogeneration, which converts the waste heat into most powerful and portable electricity. To understand or appreciate this process, join the Energy Team on October 29, 2019 to a LaRC employee tour of the Norfolk Naval Base Cogen Plant!
