Energy Action Month Tour: HRSD York River Treatment Plant

HRSD Tour Oct 26 9am to 12pm

Please join us for an employee-only tour of the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) York River Treatment Facility.
HRSD operates nine major award-winning treatment plants in Hampton Roads and four smaller plants on the Middle Peninsula with a combined capacity of 249 million gallons per day (MGD). Electricity use accounts for 25–40 percent of the operating budgets for wastewater utilities (NYSERDA, 2008). Drinking water and wastewater systems account for approximately 3–4 percent of energy use in the United States, resulting in the emissions of more than 45 million tons of GHGs annually (U.S. EPA, 2012b).The average “energy intensity” of municipal water in the U.S. is 2.6 kilowatt-hours per thousand gallons, including all of the energy associated with fresh water delivery and wastewater treatment.
An average of 1.9 million gallons of sewage is pumped from LaRC every month, that’s over 60,000 gallons per day!
Come see what happens when it leaves our Center!
