Mark your calendars for EPA’s ninth annual Fix a Leak Week, from March 20th through 26th, 2017! Household leaks can waste more than 1 trillion gallons of water annually nationwide, so the hunt is on to find those leaks.
In observance of Fix a Leak Week, take some time to look for leaks in your home and always report any leak you find at LaRC.
Leaks at Home
One in ten homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day, and the most common types of leaks found in the home include worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets, and other leaking valves. Fortunately, all are easily correctable. Fixing easily corrected household water leaks can save homeowners about ten percent on their water bills!
Keep your home leak-free and reduce water usage by repairing dripping faucets, toilet flappers, and showerheads. In most cases, fixture replacement parts don’t require major investment. If you do have to replace a fixture, look for one with a WaterSense label. Products with a WaterSense label have been independently verified to perform well; help save water, energy, and money; and encourage innovation in manufacturing.
Leaks at LaRC
Leaks are costly and wasteful at LaRC too! Energy and water management is an integral part of everyday operations on Center, and the Standard Practice and Environmental Engineering Branch (SPEEB) is responsible for ensuring the efficient use of energy and water at LaRC. Responsible energy and water consumption mean that LaRC is saving money, reducing our environmentally harmful emissions, and conserving natural resources.
LaRC has strict energy efficiency and water conservation goals through Executive Order 13693, including reducing potable water consumption intensity by 2% annually through the end of FY25 (36% total reduction). Reporting a leak is just one way you can help LaRC to reach this goal and reduce water usage.
If you come across a leak at LaRC, report it to the Facility Coordinator (list can be found here).
