Hazardous and Regulated Waste
The Center’s Hazardous and Regulated waste program is managed by the LaRC Environmental Management Office (EMO). LaRC is a generator of hazardous waste under EPA Permit number VA2800005033. LaRC generates a wide variety of wastes including solvents, fuels, metals and polymers from research. LaRC also generates Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) regulated and special wastes such as asbestos, transformer oils, and PCB capacitors. The Center is not authorized to transport hazardous waste off site, store hazardous waste beyond a 90-day accumulation period, or dispose of hazardous waste on site. LaRC uses appropriately permitted contractors to transport wastes from the 90-day Hazardous Waste Pre-Transport Facility to off-site disposal facilities. The less than 90-day Hazardous Waste Storage Facility has been operated at LaRC since 1991. Additionally, Center personnel who manage or oversee the management of Hazardous wastes at satellite accumulation areas (SAAs) are required to receive waste management training annually.
