Enviro-Tip of the Month: Recycling Can and Can Nots

The NASA Langley Recycling Program began in 1991 with the collection of paper and scrap metal. Since then, this program has grown exponentially.

In fact, LaRC recycled about 2.5 tons of aluminum cans (about 151,000 cans) in 2015. The energy saved from recycling these cans is enough to power the Headquarters Building (B2101) for 11 days!

By recycling, you are saving energy in addition to conserving resources and reducing pollution.

However, it’s important to make sure that we’re recycling correctly across the Center by placing recyclables in their appropriate collection areas and not contaminating recycling systems. Contamination occurs when non-recyclables are placed in recycling, and can include anything from food waste to plastic bags. Recycling contamination slows down the recycling process, can damage machines, or even make an entire batch unusable.
